Jammeh Kebbeh

We connected with Jammeh Kebbeh in early 2019, located several hours inland from the capital city of Banjul.
It (and majority of Gambian communities) faces all of the challenges HATN is striving to resolve: access to education, healthcare and drinkable water. 

 HATN projects underway

Access to health care is limited to those who can travel long distances.  A full day of travel on foot, by donkey cart or via an unreliable bus is required to visit a doctor or midwife. Additional travel is generally needed to obtain any medications that were prescribed.  

 

HATN has received approval to build a Community Health Centre and water tower that will service several thousand people residing in rural villages.  Construction of a pharmacy will provide a source of revenue to ensure the centre will become self-sustaining.

 HATN projects that have been completed

 

HATN designed and provided an “ambulance”, a motorcycle with a cab.  Village members pay a small fee that goes to gas and maintenance, a program completely managed by the community council.  The distance to the hospital for those that need more serious medical care is almost impossible with the modes of transport available within the village.

 
This is a farming community and HATN’s first project addressed food insecurity with a training program on new farming techniques and local farmers were supplied with organic fertilizer on a loan basis.  This self-sustaining program will ensure …

HATN’s first project addressed food insecurity with the completion of a one-hectare market garden shared by the five communities. Jammeh Kebbeh was not a farming community but with training, organic fertilizer and drip irrigation the garden will ensure sufficient food when rain levels are poor and provide additional crops for sale in the market.
