The community of La Alegria was formed when people moved from small mountain villages to unused land in the lowlands looking for a better life.  In the view of the Bolivian government this new community was occupying the land unlawfully (in other words squatters), and were denied government services.  The closest school was too far even if they were able to attend.

HATN completed construction of a six-classroom complex (above) for 370 students that includes 10 latrines and 10 showers, with maintenance provided by the community. Faced with a completed and functioning school the government agreed to provide teachers, a breakfast program and delivered on long-held promises to install electricity and paved roads for the community.  

This program is running successfully on its own.
