<image:title>The Need - 40% of the global population cannot access water.</image:title>
<image:caption>It often requires a significant amount of time and energy to obtain. For many poor communities, women and girls have to walk for miles to fetch water of questionable quality. All the while, carrying buckets that can weigh up to 80 pounds on their heads. One slip, trip, or fall could mean no water for an entire day. Accessible and reliable local clean water can revitalize communities. It can promote good health and empower young girls to attend school. It may also be the difference between a healthy harvest and starvation. We support building and repair of wells and other water and sanitation systems. <image:title>The Need - Children are dying from preventable illnesses.</image:title>
<image:caption>The vast majority of illnesses in developing countries are preventable and easy to treat. An unacceptable number of children under the age of 5 will die from preventable illnesses like malaria, diarrhea, and malnutrition. The absence of prenatal and delivery care has led to high rates of maternal mortality. There is some good news – HATN’s partnerships have been proven to be effective. Where women once gave birth on the mud floors of their homes they now receive professional medical care in a Birthing Centre. Pregnancy and birth is no longer a frightening experience. The Medical Centre and Pharmacy have not only changed the communities they are in, but they now draw people in from miles away seeking treatment for conditions, injuries, and diseases. Diseases that used to be life-threatening. Photo: Mother and son outside Medical Clinic, The Gambia</image:caption>

<image:title>The Need - Most women and children lack basic education.</image:title>
<image:caption>Our lifelong privilege of acquiring knowledge is often taken for granted, those healthy years spent developing skills ultimately paved the way for the life you have today. In impoverished nations, it’s not uncommon for children to lack basic education. It is normal for young women to be raising their own children without the rudimentary reading and math skills every family relies on. HATN believes education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. When kids learn to read and write they acquire the skills they need to move beyond subsistence. With education, the possibilities are endless. We support education by building schools, sponsoring staff, and providing supplies. By night, we support women’s education – righting the wrong of a missed opportunity at a dignified education.</image:caption>

<image:title>Back up The Need (Copy) - 40% of the global population cannot access water.</image:title>
<image:title>Back up The Need (Copy) - Children are dying from preventable illnesses.</image:title>

<image:title>Back up The Need (Copy) - Most women and children lack basic education.</image:title>

<image:caption>Women’s Prison Addition False accusations leading to imprisonment are common for the women of the barrio, often for years without access to a lawyer. While imprisoned, women are required to continue to care for their children, this means living with them in prison. Prisoners are required to pay a fee so HATN provided laundry facilities so the women could earn an income as well as provide a safe place for the children to play outdoors.</image:caption>

HATN completed a three-story community centre that houses a dental clinic and nine classrooms that are used for vocational training and provides a safe place for children to do homework. The dental clinic has become fully self-sustaining and provides dental care to Alto Cochabamba’s poorest citizens.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The community of La Alegria was formed when people moved from small mountain villages to unused land in the lowlands looking for a better life. In the view of the Bolivian government this new community was occupying the land unlawfully (in other words squatters), and were denied government services. The closest school was too far even if they were able to attend.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bolivia - Quelcata</image:title>
<image:caption>Quelcata is situated in the Bolivian mountains. At 13,000 feet of elevation the living conditions are very difficult. The school was dangerously close to collapse and the health of the community was impacted by a lack of nutritious foods and a lack of latrines. HATN built a new three-room school and provided educational materials (above).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bolivia - Quelcata</image:title>
<image:caption>A lack of latrines was a serious risk to the health of the community but how do you provide plumbing at this elevation and when water is in short supply? HATN worked with the community to install 21 dry composting latrines (above). Composing toilets, together with a secondary composting step produces a humus-like end product that the villagers use to fertilize their green houses.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Small in-ground greenhouses (above) provide a hospitable environment for growing vegetables during the cold winter months. Built as a community effort to give families the nutrition they badly need, the gardens are expanded during the warmer months to provide crops for sale at local markets.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the village of Mana, access to health care was limited to those who could afford the fee and travel long distances. The women of Mana would all too often give birth in their huts or on the roadside while trying to reach the hospital. HATN completed construction of a Community Health Centre and Maternity Centre (pictured above) staffed by a doctor, nurse, pharmacist and two midwives. A new water tower was installed to service the centre.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Mali - Mana</image:title>
<image:caption>HATN assisted the community to establish a community board and to ensure they would be successful in running the centre, training was provided by a private health group. In spite of consultation and pharmacy costs that are affordable for the village, the centre no longer requires financial support from HATN.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Other projects in Mana include programs to supply mosquito nets, nutritional supplements (above) to combat malnutrition, financial support for teachers’ salaries, night classes for women, construction of a girl’s school and supply and distribution of water filters. HATN supplied water filters ensure clean water for over 100 families. Almost a decade later 65% remain in use.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Karassana is a new community for HATN. Over 250 children were struggling to get an education in one 3-room dilapidated and unsafe building. HATN completed construction of a new 3-room school and latrines, furniture, and school supplies. An additional 3-room building will follow along with a tower well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When HATN first visited the village of Doneguela the challenge was where to start when the distance to the closest school was insurmountable, they had no access to healthcare and were facing severe water challenges. The priority for the community was education. HATN first constructed a school (above) to educate 150 children from grades 1-3. Latrines, furniture and school supplies were provided and HATN continues to provide salaries for teachers. Construction of a school for grades 4-6 followed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Creation of a flourishing agriculture program was implemented by members of HATN’s Malian team members, called TEGEW. Following education for TEGEW on new farming techniques, local farmers (above) were supplied with organic fertilizer on a loan basis and training on the new methods. HATN provided the funding for the training and the initial supply of fertilizer however each farmer was able to, through the best harvest on record, repay loans and increase the size of their fields. This self-sustaining program ensures sufficient food when rain levels are poor and additional crops for sale in the market. A new rice program is underway.</image:caption>
